Karan Johar's 2.70 crore car!

KJ is a smooth operator, indeed. Getting celebs to crawl out their dark closets is one kind of feat. And 'driving' people to pay big bucks, sorry, mega millions is something else. Recently at an upscale charity auction, KJ was holding the auction together; and he managed to sell a Rolls Royce for approximately 2.70 crores! The audience was left with parted lips and straining eyes. Hey, if KJ can sell his films so brilliantly, what’s a Rolls Royce or two, eh?

Movies Previews: Jodhaa Akbar

Jodhaa Akbar
INDIATIMES MOVIES

Synopsis:
Jodhaa Akbar is a sixteenth century love story of a marriage of alliance that gave birth to true love between a great Mughal Emperor, Akbar and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa. Emperor Akbar was very successful politically. After having secured the Hindu Kush, he furthered his realm by conquest until his empire extended from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, and from the Himalayas to the Godhavari River. Through a shrewd blend of tolerance, generosity and force, Akbar won the allegiance of the Rajputs who were the most belligerent Hindus. But little did Akbar know that when he married Jodhaa, a fiery Rajput princess, in order to further strengthen his relations with the Rajputs, he would in turn be embarking upon a new journey - the journey of true love. The daughter of King Bharmal of Amer, Jodhaa resented being reduced to a mere political pawn in this marriage of alliance, and Akbar's biggest challenge now did not merely lie in winning battles, but in winning the love of Jodhaa - a love hidden deep below resentment and extreme prejudice. Jodhaa Akbar is their untold love story.

Spiderman makes Bhojpuri debut

New Delhi: Spiderman is sure going places — not only is he sporting a brand new black costume in the third installment of the series, he is all set to speak a different tongue as well.

Not literally, but Spiderman 3 will be the first Hollywood film to be dubbed in Bhojpuri, when it releases next month.

And these could well be the dialogues that our friendly neighbourhood Spiderman could be mouthing in good old Bhojpuri.

"Till date, people have watched Spiderman in English and Hindi, now the wait is
over and you can watch it in Bhojpuri," says Bhojpuri actor Rani Chatterjee.

But a Bhojpuri Spiderman doesn't come cheap. A whopping Rs 3 crore is being spent to dub it; an amount that can fund two Bhojpuri films. And as many as 50 to 60 prints of this Bhojpuri Spiderman will be released.

"When Spiderman will start talking in Bhojpuri, we think that it will have a magical effect on people," says Marketing Head of Percept, Naveen Shah.

Well, this is definitely music to the ears of Bhojpuri audience. "Oh, my God! What is this that flies towards us from the skies," says Bhojpuri actor Ravi Kishen.

We don't realize what we have until....

Too often we don't realize
What we have until it's gone.
Too often we wait too late to say
"I'm sorry - I was wrong."

Sometimes it seems we hurt the ones
We hold dearest to our hearts.
And we allow foolish things
To tear our lives apart.

Far too many times we let
Unimportant things into our minds.
And then it's usually too late
To see what made us blind.

So be sure that you let people know
How much they mean to you.
Take that time to say the words
Before your time is through.

Be sure that you appreciate
Everything you've got.
And be thankful for the little things in life...that mean a lot.

Think about your destination.
But don't worry if you stray.
Because the most important thing
Is that you've learned along the way.

Movie Review: Shakalaka Boom Bom

By Martin D’Souza, http://www.glamsham.com

AJ is an established singer with five hit albums under his belt. The sixth is on its way. He has a good female fan following and is generally happy with the way the music industry has accepted him. The music company that has promoted him too is raking in the moolah. Reggie is an upcoming singer with an attitude. He writes good music as well as lyrics and the moment AJ meets him in the studio he feels threatened. He realizes his days at the top of the charts are numbered.

But pray, why does he have such insecurity? No one understands. Reggie has yet to release an album and no one has heard about him. He is popular in discos though. So Bobby Deol as AJ gets to play a negative role, while Upen Patel as Reggie comes out as the hero. If you are looking for a story, forget about it. There is none here. It’s one of those ‘leave your brain behind’ flicks that were so popular in the mid 90s.

The rest of the movie shows a fuming Bobby Deol planning Reggie’s downfall. If only he put in more energies in writing music, he would have had a few more hit albums!

It appears that director Suneel Darshan set out to make a thriller and ended up with this musical fiasco that has neither ‘sur’ nor ‘taal’!!! Talking about music, Himesh Reshammiya who has scored the music now sounds very predictable. Like AJ, it looks like he is proving to be no genius, with the same beats and tempo being heard in all his tracks.

Bobby Deol has no role to play. He is a good performer but this film has no script. Upen Patel has good screen presence and is intent on putting his best in any insipid role. To be honest, like I mentioned earlier, this boy has talent and he does impress. Kangana Ranaut is a notch better than Celina Jaitley, who it appears, is still in the RED mode. There is no difference in her portrayal of her role in this movie. It is an extension of Vikam Bhatt’s RED. Naturally, you see red!

The only time the movie is a movie is when Anupam Kher appears on screen for his cameo. But then he is an actor who is a league apart.

At the end you wonder why this movie was named so. Also, you wonder, why you sat through it in the first place. To analyze it in one line, it’s as boring as DELHI HEIGHTS.

METRO Music Review

By Satyajit, http://www.glamsham.com

Year 2007 seems to be going Pritam’s way, the golden run of success that triggered with JUST MARRIED and HATTRICK made its way clear and sound with recently released KYA LOVE STORY HAI. Anurag Basu’s LIFE IN A…METRO (earlier titled METRO) proves to be another feather in his cap as he brings back the ardor and punch of his successful and much acclaimed WOH LAMHE, GANGSTER and ANKAHEE into fine pack of twelve original soundtracks. Pritam confides his trusted singers K.K and Bangladeshi pop sensation James in crooning out passionately flammable hard rock solo tracks. Even the fresh singing talents Suhail and Soham makes their presence felt in couple of impressive sentimental soundtracks. The album holds its biggest surprise in its pristinely immaculate lyrical work that fuels up the excruciating and impulsive volatile sentiments.

The nostalgia of contemplatively romantic emotions prevails as the concept of “One City, Countless Emotions” is voiced out with promising vocals, spirited hard rock music and meaningful lyrics in everlasting “In Dino”. Pritam’s lost in woods “Khawabon Ki” (MUDDA) promises another soul inspiration for this thematically inclined track with dash of Sufi rock zing. Promising singing talent Soham gives his best effort in building a castle of love nest for love struck emotions with expressively rendered lyrics. Sayed Quadri’s lyrics catapult temerity of pensive emotions with lines like “In Dino Dil Mere, Mujhse Hai Keh Raha, Tu Khwab Saja…” It’s disco time with echoing and pulsating rollicking beats that comes thundering and remixed (by Bunty Rajput) with sauntering paced vocals and music in loud and impressive “In Dino (Revisited)”.

The soft and squashy instrumental binge of “Nothing gonna change my love for you” (GLENN MEDERIOS) sprinkles the redolent whiff of eternal love as uproarious vocal thump of K.K makes things fanatically passionate in “Alvida”. Lyricist Sayed Quadri’s malodorously romantic lines “Chupke se kahin Dheeme paao se, Jane kis tarah Kis Ghadi, Aaghe badh gaye, Humse raahon mein Per tum to the yahin, Kuch bhi na suna Kab ka tha gila, Kaise keh diya Alvida” are expressively romantic to the core. K.K sings passionately by varying his vocal tonality to higher altitude as the song gist out the depressed, scornful emotions with loud pitched orchestration. It works as sequel to Pritam’s infectiously punched “Bheegi Bheegi” (GANGSTER) with commercially promising results. It’s Pritam’s favorite James at vocals in “Alvida (reprise)” that comes out as another “rebellious on move” from the self-styled hard rock band with intrinsically infectious guitar strumming and bombastic percussions. Simply Rocking!!!

Its mushy rhythm and blue’s musical mode that carries the love struck emotions with vocal sugariness, impressive lyrics and spirited musical zest in romantically bizarre “O Meri Jaan”. K.K shows his vocal flamboyance as he switches to higher tempo with changing tonality of the track. The track is graced by new lyricist Sandeep Srivastava’s expressive lyrical flow with lines like “Tu Aagaya Yun Nazar Mein, Jaise Subah Dopahar Mein, Madhoshi Yunhi Nahi, Dil Pe Chahi Hai…” Treasure it for lovely romantic night and surely it will brighten up the delightful proceedings. Besides maintaining good track record with KK, Pritam’s introduces another promising lyricist to the musical front with this number. Suhail, another extravagant prodigy impresses with his youthful singing allure in its second version with similar romantic zeal in “O Meri Jaan (Reprise)”.

Bangladeshi pop sensation James has surprises in store as he moves positively with expressively melodramatic soundtrack about changing “relationships” in the soundtrack “Rishtey”. The song scores maximum in connecting the narrative elements of the story with changing fortunes of the characters in Sayed Quadri’s meaningful lyrics “Ristey to nahi rishton ki parchaaiyaa mile, Yeh kaisi bheed bass yahaan tanhaayiyaan mile…” In terms of acceptance, it should find many takers among thoughtful listeners and surely it will be big catalyst for making it special in narration of thought provoking events. DJ Nikhil Chinnapa and DJ Naved tries to make mood wacky by enthralling this number with mixed bag of “club mix” disco fillers that give many reasons to shake leg in “Rishtey (Revisited)”.

Pritam promises to make it special show for lyricist as another impressive set of lyrics gives romantic jitters and feel of newly “discovered” love in strikingly impressive “Baatein Kuch Ankahee Si”. Adnan Sami gets another moment to cherish after “Dil Kya Kare” (SAALAM-E-ISHQ) and softens his vocal chord in delivering a nerve-racking romantic blue number. Its music has soul-stirring feel and intimidating impact of “Lamha Lamha” (GANGSTER) and “Ankahee” (ANKAHEE) with emotionally enriched lyrics. Once again its Sandeep Srivastava’s gifted lyrical works in lines “Baatein kuch ankaahe si, Kuch ann suni se honelagi, Kabu dil pe raha na, Hasti humari khone lagi,
Shaayad yehi hai Pyaar…” that works magically in creating an ambience of eternal love. This scintillating inspiring track finds its strong grounding as it get reproduced in two more versions. It’s lovable Suhail’s impressive unplugged vocals that give it a country music feel that stays on senses in the remarkably conceived “Baatein Kuch Ankahee Si (Unplugged)”. This soundtrack gets itself into trendy mode as DJ A Myth techno-wizardry shines brightest in disco beat culture listening feast in “Baatein Kuch Ankahi Si (Revisited)”.

Mediocrity plugs in the album with over-sappy situational track “Kar Saalam” that talk about optimism in life with cheerful vocals and enthused enthralling hard rock music feel. Pritam voices this number along with his two prodigies Suhail and Soham with traditional Maharastrian folksy musical base with average impact.

Pritam promising a rock band show all the way as the album props up as hard rock party album with couple of soul-stirring numbers. It will be listening pleasure for all poetic ears as lyricist Sayed Quadri, Amitabh Verma and new find Sandeep Srivastava conquers heart with their remarkable poetic intellect. LIFE IN A…METRO proves to be musical sequel to WOH LAMHE and GANGSTER and comes as welcome surprise for hard rock music buffs for its enchanting musical display.

Winner all the way!!!

Music Review: TARA RUM PUM

By Satyajit, http://www.glamsham.com

Vishal-Shekhar, the imminent musical prodigal duo seems to be losing their ways in recent times as none of their recent work has matched with the quality work of their contemporaries. Unfortunately their musical voyage with giants “Yash Raj” banner hasn’t been nostalgic or groundbreaking and the music made itself popular after the film’s success. TA RA RUM PUM falls prey to mediocrity again and once again fails to create any ripple either with foot thumping track or with syrupy love songs. This album brings out the contemporary fervor and ardor of contemporary “Yash Raj” Films with its music being inspirational lifts from films like SALAAM NAMASTE, DHOOM 2, DUS and to some extent EK AJNABEE.

Kindergarten’s chirpy and engrossing comic book tale about four playful bears (“Ta”, “Ra”, “Ma” and “Pa”) promises playfully motivated sentiments of kid’s fun and frolic adventures with enthusiastic voices in the colorfully bizarre “Ta Ra Rum Pum”. After HUM TUM, it’s another visual spectacle about animation’s techno-wizardry with vocal flamboyance of Shaan and Mahalaxmi Iyer. Vishal-Shekhar’s frolicking and zealous musical display may not be extravagantly flashy but caters to the situational needs. Hear it for innocent shrill “n” soft vocal display of “little champs” singing prodigies Master Shravan Suresh and Sneha Suresh with tantalizing melodic work that might be reminiscent to our childhood antics.

The nostalgia of romantic redolence freshens up senses with smoothening “n” subtle harmonious exhibit of impressive vocals with expressively penetrative lyrical work in the romantically vibrant “Hey Shona”. It’s ever impressive Shaan at the vocals with his “bright as sunshine” vocal ebullience radiating out gleaming romanticism with delight. Sunidhi Chauhan’s soft “n” silky voice catalyzes the over-sappy feel mood and mellows effectively with Shaan’s promising work. The compositions, tunes and beats may sound repetitive (similar to “Tu Jahan” and “My Dil Goes Mmmm” (SALAAM NAMASTE) but overall it creates an ambience of sheer romanticism that stays in senses. Vishal-Shekhar’s scores pure gold this time in churning out a brilliant mushy soundtrack after the impressive “Halke Halke” (HONEYMOON TRAVELS PVT LTD) and should prove to be winning equation for the album.

Loud, gaudy and intrinsically pompous flavors of “bhangra” delights come with a typical Chopra’s-Johar’s musical tonality in the highly animated “Nachle Ve”. It speaks highly about Chopra’s inclination towards Punjabi folksy musical tang with shades of “Chak De” (HUM TUM) and “Lodi” (VEER ZAARA). Sonu Nigam’s enthused vocals deliver the festive emotions with ecstatic delight with elated Somya Raoh joining the show in tandem. Vishal-Shekhar’s has not been popular with “bhangra” numbers so far and even this sounds too situational than anything “earth-shattering” to the ears.

The aura of “sixties” romanticism makes schmaltzy vows with synchronized piano notes as a prelude with Shreya Ghoshal’s vocal brilliance in the expressively penetrative number “Ta Ra Ra Ra Rum Tararumpum”. Javed Akhtar’s poetic genius brightens gloomy hope of survival with a strong feel of grit and determination in lines like “Zindagi mein koi bhi kami ho, Palkon pe jo zara bhi nami ho, Asun na bahana tum, Dukh na uthana tum, Har na jana duniya se…” In terms of rhythm pattern it strikes close similarities with the title track of KABHI KHUSHI KABHI GUM with a contemporary touch of “feel good” factor. Shreya Ghoshal’s somber “n” solemn vocals narrate the strong-willed emotions of “never say die” spirit through the sentimental healing touches of distressed mother to her lovable kids. Its situational and unconventional feel might restrict its acceptance but still it proves the mettle of the singer and composers in big way.

Mix “n” match of Afro-American hip-hop with impulse of funky Latino base music rules the floors in hip-shaking soundtrack “Ab to Forever”. It’s an above average score where the composer duo rehashes their previous work (“Mama Told Me” (EK AJNABEE)) with the intimidating loud impact of “Dil Laga Na” and “Touch Me” (DHOOM 2). KK delivers another swell performance in a “rock-star” singing mode but the music isn’t “yuppie” nor catchy to attract eyeballs. Shreya Ghoshal’s supple voice adds femininity to the number with predictable lyrics about boy wooing a girl.

Vishal Dadlani tries to match the musical preeminence and commercial triumph of “Mitwa” (KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA) with disappointing results as he pelts out in a contemporary Sufi rock mode in a situational soundtrack “Saiyaan”. After “Dhoom Again” (DHOOM 2), the composer turn vocalist irritates with his unimpressive voice matched with jarring and ear-splitting musical display. In the end, it props up as contemporary “banjara” (gypsy) number with modest impact and adds itself to the number of unnoticed soundtracks.

Vishal-Shekhar’s above average musical work fails to live up to the high standards of “Yash Raj” banner but still satisfies listeners with couple of lively and enthralling tracks. It has moments of cheers, laughter and sorrow in tracks like “Hey Shona” and “Ta Ra Rum Pum” but overall it has nothing spectacular to offer. Like DHOOM 2, the highlight will be on its visual spectacle feel (breathtaking car racing thrill and enthralling animation) than on its musical flamboyance with the merits of bankable stars (Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee) on its credits.

Movie Review: DELHI HEIGHTS

By Martin D’Souza, www.glamsham.com

Is this a movie on how a marriage should ideally work in an ideal situation; on how to compromise? Or on how not to let work tensions take over personal life; on how to beat work stress? Or on how to live harmoniously in a housing society? DELHI HEIGHTS would be better off if it was named ‘Dizzy Heights’, because that’s what exactly happens to you during the course of the movie.

The director is at a loss in explaining in exactly what he it trying to depict. The story is of Neha Dhupia (Suhana) and Jimmy Sheirgill (Abeer) two ideal youngsters working for rival companies. On how they are a happily married couple. However, they have no time for themselves with Neha and Jimmy both engrossed in wanting to take off their careers to another plane. Outcome: there is a crash-landing of their relationship, while that of Rohit Roy and his wife Simone Singh, which is rocky in the beginning, thanks to her husband’s Casanova ways, takes off smoothly.

Then there’s a bookie who lives in DELHI HEIGHTS, who began as a punter and who ultimately lands in the cop’s net for his interest in cricket matches. There’s also Timmy, a Sardar who cries at the wedding reception of his daughter, Sweety. Om Puri as Timmy puts in a stellar performance with his near perfect sardar act. There are also four teenaged boys who are out to have fun. Well, that’s about it…

The movie balances on a weak script and as a result comes crashing down much before it even takes off. At the end, you have to wade through the debris of your mind, trying to figure out what DELHI HEIGHTS is all about. The movie opens with a shot of Neha Dhupia’s shapely calves and ends with her making up with her husband, after their misunderstanding. If anything, this movie is an eye-opener for makers, of Jimmy Sheirgill’s talent. The boy has really shaped into a fine performer. Special mention must be made of the styling of both the lead stars.

That’s about it. If you’re suffering from vertigo, give DELHI HEIGHTS a miss!

Movie Review: Say Salam India

By Martin D’Souza, http://www.glamsham.com

The timing of this film is just not right. If the makers had the ongoing World Cup cricket in mind and a tagline that reads, “Lets bring the Cup home”, I wonder where they went wrong in the working of the release date. Obviously, the start date of cricket’s premier tournament, being currently held in the Caribbean, was no secret. If it had to release couple of weeks before the start of the tournament, this film’s fortunes would have been a different story, at least where collection figures are concerned.

But all’s not lost. Cricket is the winner, at least in this movie by debutant director Subhash Kapoor. And disappointed fans would want to watch this flick for that feel-good factor of seeing performers with determination in their eyes and fire in their belly, which was sadly missing in the Indian team that were sent packing even before the tournament started. Bangladesh proved to the Indians what the boys from a school, majoring in Khusti, did to the nose-in-the air, over-confident lads of a well-to-do school with parents with famous last names. Singhanias, Birlas, and what have you…

It’s a subject close to the heart of millions in this cricket-crazy nation but the way Kapoor has treated it deserves kudos. It gives you the same feeling when you saw ROCKY, the Sylvester Stallone starrer for the first time. The now famous track Eye Of The Tiger added to the fortunes of the film and set the mood of the fights. Here too, there is intelligent use of good music to build up the tempo and get you in the groove just when things are heating up. All of this adds to the tension of the moment and before you know it, you are left chewing your nails.

And when there is just one ball left and a boundary to be hit, your mind races back to that famous One-day tie in Sharjah where Javed Miandad whacked a befuddled Chetan Sharma over the mid-wicket boundary for a six. But here the story is different. Needing five to win of the last over and with the tail-ender on strike, tension reaches fever pitch when four dot balls are bowled. The batsmen have decided that they will scramble for a single on the fifth ball to give the strike to the skipper of the team. The rival team urge their bowler to send in a bouncer. The ball is bowled, the batsman misses, and so does the wicket-keeper. Ball races to the boundary and the underdogs have won. Kapil’s devils that played merry hell in England in 1983 have been revisited.

Had this movie been shown to the Indian team at a private screening before they set foot in the West Indies to take on Bangladesh, I dare say, the story would have been quite different. The movie evokes in you the fighting spirit and the awe of playing on the biggest stage of them all. But sadly, most of our current cricketers have been playing there for a minimum of 10 years. So it's like ghar ki murgi dal barabar! Either ways, I suggest that coach Greg Chappell take his boys out to the multiplex for a training session of a different kind.

Here he will find a very dedicated coach in Sanjay Suri, who has carved in an excellent performance, taking one back to the time of MY BROTHER NIKHIL. Chappell will also find a bunch of youngsters from a small town whose only aim is to play cricket and play it to the best of their ability.

As for you, my dear readers, don't miss this movie. I assure you; you will come back rooting for the underdogs. You see, that's what happened in 1983. Our boys are still trying to get the 'Cup back home'!
